Much Ado About Nothing Critique
The production, that I am doing the critique for, is the Shakespeare play Much Ado About Nothing. It was About a family, the father who has a daughter named Hero and a niece named Beatrice. Within the house, there were two company ladies, Ursula and Margaret that served Hero and Beatrice. Then, a senior Don Pedro comes over to visit Leonato, who is Hero’s father. With Don Pedro, also comes Claudio, who falls in love with Hero, Claudio is also Don Pedro's right hand. Don John, who is Don Pedro's bastard brother, is dating Conrade. Conrade is very pretentious, and wants to have a rich man as a husband. Another characters is Borachio who is Don John's friend. There was also a bachelor, Benedick, who was Don Pedro's friend, and who was in love with Beatrice. He tried not show any feelings to her or anyone however. Beatrice also loved him, but as well as Benedick, she also tried to hide her feelings for Benedick. At the end, Don John overheard Claudio, Benedick, and Don Pedro talk about a celebration of their future marriage with Hero. Don John, Borachio and Conrade invented a blasphemy against Hero. Because of that blasphemy, and the day Claudio was going to marry Hero, Claudio decided not to marry Hero, and in front of all the guests, he told everyone how Hero was with another man in her balcony. Hero ended up dying, after the heartbreaking episode. At the end, Hero was not dead, but rather faking her dead to teach Claudio a lesson. Heor and Claudio got married at the end, and so did Beatrice and Benedick, telling each other how much they loved one another. As per Don John, Borachio, and Conrade faced hail, thanks to the watch, who was witnessing how they were celebrating the blasphemy.
The Costuming was ok, not the best in my opinion, but good. I did like some of the clothes, but not all of them. For instance, Don John's clothes, even though he was a bastard brother, the clothes did not match high class society. Borachio’s clothes made him look like he was the gardener, did not fit the standards of a want to be rich guy. As far as Beatrice, I did not like the black leggings with dark brown boots, the colours did not match at all, and she looked like any other normal person, not as a rich person. The outfit for Verges was very good, and it did fit the character, as well as Don Pedro's clothes, and the Fryer. Everyone else’s clothes were okay. The two outfit that distracted me the most were Borachio's and Don John’s, I do not feel that they were appropriate for two men that are looking to be, and trying to fit, in the high class society. Another outfit that distracted me was Beatrice's black dress. For some reason, the dress was hanging out from the back and it looked bad for the production. For Beatrice, I would have had jeans, and different types of shoes instead of the black leggings and the brown boots. For Borachio, I would have had him wear something more as a rich punk instead of a gardener outfit. As far as Don John, I would have had him were the same black as gothic, but with better pants, shirt, and shoes, no chains or make up.
