Fashion 1350- History of Costume
Fashion in the 1890’s in Europe as well as other countries influenced by the Europeans, has been characterized by long and elegant lines; tall collars, military collars, and the rise of sportswear. It was an era of great dress reforms led by the invent of the drop-frame safety bicycle, which allowed women the opportunity to ride bicycles and do sports more comfortably, and therefore, a new appropriate clothing line was created, and not only that but tailoring too.
The dainty costume is made of red wool, with mink and silk ribbons for the sash-ties. The arrangements of the decoration, which consists of moire taffeta ribbon, lace edging and lace ruching, gives it an air of youthfulness and grace that is highly pleasing. The closing is made invisible at the center of the front. The Sash-ties of ribbon tacked over the under-arm seams are crossed in front and tied at the back, in a large bow with long ends. The coat-shaped sleeves have large flaring puffs above the elbow and are decorated at the wrists with a frill of lace edging. The standing collar is military style.
The skirt holds out in the front of the body, and in the back, it flares broadly. It also presents deep flute folds at the sides in the back. Lastly, a ruche of lace in the middle of the skirt.
This dress was worn on different occasions, such as receptions, weddings, and the like. The costume is appropriate and also suitable for visiting and to wear at church. It may be duplicated in plain or fancy silk, crepon, veiling, grenadine and many semi-transparent fabrics. In addition, lace, ribbon, spangled, or embroidered net bands, will adorn it simply and or elaborately. Further, heavy wool fabric was very popular for winter times. The grey and dark colors were the favorite colors to wear in winter time. For the Summer season on the other hand, silks such as foulard, Shanghai and Habutai would make up charmingly in this style, which possesses a refreshing simplicity. In fact, a very lovely costume of sea-green taffeta shot with pink was made in this style to wear at a dressy Summer resort, as well as to be worn later in the season as either an afternoon, and or an evening home costume.
The 1890’s was not only the decade of the new woman, but also, the Suffragette movement, in which the tailored made dresses, jackets, and skirts, were of a fairly masculine style.
